On your first encounter, Lofoten
will appear as a row of mountain peaks stretching out into the sea, separated
by narrow straits and fjords. The mountains rise almost straight up from the
seashore, and picturesque fishing villages cling to the narrow strips of rocky
ground between mountain and sea.
Even though the countryside is unique, it is more than just scenery for tourists.
Each village is a vibrant community, where people live their daily lives.
Naturally enough, fishing and the fishing industry are the most important
sources of income, but there are also other types of industry, services and
agriculture.
The delightful balance between spectacular scenery and flourishing communities
is yet another reason why Lofoten has such powerful appeal to travellers from
many different countries.
You will need all your senses in Lofoten:
SEE magnificent scenery, the ocean, inlets and straits, mountains and golden
sunlight.
HEAR the wind, the waves, the birds, the boats – and hear the peace
and quiet, too!
SMELL the salty sea air, the sea weed, the flowers and the stockfish.
FEEL the winter darkness, the
bright summer nights, workday and weekend.
TASTE fresh cod with liver and roes, cured cod and other specialities, at
the many excellent restaurants, or cook your own catch of fresh coley!
REMEMBER that the people of Lofoten have been used to welcoming visitors for
over 1000 years. You will be met with genuine interest and will always be
made welcome!
